Synaesthesia

Synaesthesia

Here is a phenomenon that caught me by surprise. I received a slight  "head-up" signal via a casual mention of the word "fusion of senses," and something about tasting colors. This led to the technical term SYNAESTHESIA. Not that I was completely in the dark, mind you,  I am sure that it has casually been mentioned to me before but I paid absolutely NO attention to this subject until I started digging in the psychology of colors.

Here are a few Synaesthesias:

  • CONDITION: Sound triggers the experience of seeing  colors.

  • CONDITION: Smell triggers the experience of seeing  colors.

Since we have 5 senses, you may appreciate some of the other possible sense fusions:

Taste to color
Taste to touch
Taste to sound
Taste to touch
Smell to sound
Smell to touch
Sound to smell
Sound to taste
Sound to touch
Touch to sound
Touch to smell
Touch to taste
Touch to color
Sight to hearing
Sight to smell
Sight to taste

Synesthesia means: joined sensation.

Too much to cover. But, oh!, what a fascinating topic.

There are many artistical implication. Dig into the subject and you will

see.
