Facial Expression Control
Can you really be in control of all your facial muscles? For the most part, control is automatic. After all you don't have to remind yourself to look sad or happy -- it is automatic. Then there is the quasi-control where you can make your face look a though it is happy, sad, concerned, etc... But, some expressions are MUCH harder to artificially-evoke than others. It is not very difficult to "manufacture" a sad expression than a happy/smiling one. For the most part, we all can either consciously or subconsciously determine if someone else has smile a genuine or not. Do you really thing that you can have your face remain expressionless? Yes, there are moments where it is absolutely crucial to have complete control.Just think how far a professional poker player would go if the facial muscles could not be completely controlled. But, read on ... In an article entitled "Why it is hard to keep a straight face, a page on the BBC news web site and pointed out that "... the unconscious mind exerts direct control of your facial muscles." If you think you have complete control, you really don't -- unconsciously triggered mini-expressions and face muscle twitching is under subconscious control. |
